With daily train services (except 25 and 26 December or 1 January), rail travel offers you a sustainable way to visit the area.
There are connections at Newcastle and Carlisle from railway stations throughout the country to the Tyne Valley Railway and the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country.
You can plan your rail journey online or visit a staffed railway booking office. Ticket prices will depend on the journey you are taking. There are discounts if you have a national railcard.
There’s a useful day ticket, the Hadrian’s Wall Country Line day ranger, allowing you to hope on and off the train as many times as you like. It permits travel between Sunderland and Whitehaven, a great way to explore Hadrian’s Wall country. Other ranger and rover tickets are available. International visitors can obtain a BritRail pass providing rail travel throughout the country.
By Bus
The AD122 bus provides connecting travel from Hexham and Haltwhistle Railway Stations to Roman sites and attractions.
Visiting the UK’s World Heritage Sites Sustainably by Rail
During the pilot project of Hadrian’s Wall Youth Ambassadors, young people explored UNESCO’s sustainable development goals. The young people supported UNESCO’s desire that, where possible, transport to and within World Heritage Sites should be sustainable. They asked, ‘Why can’t we have a leaflet, a map, to point to the World Heritage Sites easily accessible by rail?’
Their aspiration, became Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership’s inspiration to demonstrate how sustainable rail travel can be used to visit UK World Heritage Sites.
With the support of World Heritage UK, CrossCountry Trains, Community Rail Network and TransPennine Express, TVCRP have produced a leaflet and a short video featuring 28 of the UK’s World Heritage Sites. These include useful information about how to use sustainable transport to visit the sites, as well as a map showing the rail network and locations of the World Heritage Sites.
