Make a Roman standard, flag or dragon's head!
Roman flags, standards and dracos - dragon heads - were symbols of honour and a way to identify different cavalry units.
This “how to” guide will help you get started in making your own creation. You can also use your imagination and online searches for pictures of Roman flags, standards and dracos to bring your ideas to life!

Most flags and standards had an animal or figure in the middle. These were usually gold on red or blue.
You will need:
- Fabric
- Tin foil
- Paper plates or card
- A stick, cane or cardboard roll
- Ribbon or wool for fringing
- Glue
Make a Dracos - dragon's head
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not make a draco?
A draco is a dragon’s head mounted on a post with colourful fabric trailing behind. It would have been carried by one of the horsemen in the Roman cavalry.
You will need:
- Paper cup
- Fabric paper
- Stick, cane or cardboard roll
- Glue
